Leicester Riders Face Challenge as Blake Bowman Sidelined by Injury

Updated: Jan 26

Current Super League Basketball League leaders Leicester Riders are hit with a setback after their guard, Blake Bowman, has been sidelined ‘due to a knee injury’ according to Riders Media.

Bowman has been a key rotational player for the Riders this season. In their 2024/2025 SLB Cup contention, Blake averaged 3.6 points, 0.8 rebounds and 0.4 assists per game in 7.6 minutes. Though these numbers may not seem handsome, Bowman’s participation in SLB games has been crucial - especially taking into consideration his 9 points he scored against the Newcastle Eagles, displaying his efficiency as a Riders player.

The Leicester Riders currently average 69.9 points per game, with the London Lions coming close with just 68.4 points per game. Though the Derby-born’s absence may not seem as significant at first glance, his defensive capabilities as a guard have aided the team in maintaining their defensive stats - such as allowing just 65.1 points per game, one of the best in the league.

Now the Riders must rely on their bench players to fill the gap, such as Duke Shelton and J’raan Brooks. This could perhaps affect their performance, especially in defence against competitive teams like the London Lions or Sheffield Sharks

With the SLB Cup in close reach of the Leicester Riders, pressure is now forced onto the team to see how they can make it through this hiccup in their journey to potentially being Super League Basketball Cup Victors. Will the Riders dominate their next few games? Or can the London Lions potentially snatch their leading position out their hands? Only time and a whole lot of basketball games can tell.
